Youmacon is a colourful, fantastic four day celebration of Japanese pop culture and anime that has been running since 2005. Over the years it has attracted some impressive guests, with the lavish Masked Ball, Youma Idol and an Anime Name That Tune as very popular recent additions.
This massive convention – the largest in Detroit, has events running every hour from doors opening ‘til the last exhausted guest leaves. There are interactive games and competitions, workshops, guest panels, cosplay, live music, exhibitors, and much, much more.
Highlights must include the Live Action Mario and Donkey Kong Parties and the Pokemon Go Mega Event which are played throughout Detroit – players are warned to ‘expect the unexpected’!
The Charity Masked Ball is a chance to really go to town, tripping the light fantastic in your best costumes, and do your bit for charity; there are so many chances to get involved and really feel part of the action. Youmacon’s Fan Art Theatre Competition (AMV, Avatar, MLP, Live Action, Anything music video competition) and Youma Idol are chances for everyone to get involved, taking part, voting, and cheering – you might pick the next pop star, or, it could even be you!
The vendors list includes well over 150 merchants selling everything you could possibly dream of, whilst the dealer’s room is treasure chest of opportunities to complete your collections, with multitudes of rare and unique merchandise.
Chris and Chris – IAMDYNANITE, will be performing their powerful energised music after two whole years of non stop touring, and the really unusual steampunk inspired Steam Powered Giraffe are putting on shows throughout Youmacon. Keiran Strange, the quirky, high energy Rock Geek God, will be performing new and old tracks with his band.
Actresses Tara Platt, Lisa Ortiz and Cristina Vee are taking their turns on the guest panels, along with Ian Sinclair, Austin Tindle, and YouTuber Tom Fawkes. This is the chance to find out all the backstage gossip, what inspires them, and what their next projects are – anything that’s been bugging you.
Youmacon really is a fantastic celebration, full of colour, lights, music and inspiration. It’ll leave you with a warm fuzzy glow and a promise to be there again next year.
